Cat Allergy

A cat allergy can really put a wrench in your plans to own a leisurely animal that is low maintenance. It can also leave you feeling miserable and not knowing why. A cat allergy is very common, especially in those who already suffer from another type of allergy. Most people don’t realize they have a cat allergy so they aren’t taking the precautions to remedy it or taking the right types of allergy medications.

The symptoms of a cat allergy are often very similar to those of other allergies except they don’t go away. Another reason is it takes up to a month of being away from cat dander to stop having the symptoms. It is easy to say that the allergen isn’t the cat because you still have the symptoms when you go to work. It takes time for the dander to get out of your body and out of your home. If the dander is on your clothing then you will also be transferring it to your vehicles as well.

A cat allergy is most common when you have an indoor cat than an outdoor cat. This is because the cat allergy is often the result of their dander that is in the air and all around your house. Dander from you cat can be found anywhere your cat hangs out including the carpet, your curtains, your bed, and on your clothing.

Common symptoms of a cat allergy include. You should consult your doctor to find out if you have a cat allergy. There are some steps you can take to make the symptoms less bothersome that don’t require you to get rid of your cat. Your doctor can also prescribe you medication if necessary. Don’t allow you cat to sleep with you. This will allow you to rest better. To make sure you don’t carry dander from your cat to the bed, shower and put on clean clothing before going to bed. In fact, try to keep your cat from entering your bedroom at all. This will give you one location in the house where there shouldn’t be too much dander to flare up your cat allergy.

Using a HEPA filter in your home will reduce the amount of cat danger in the air and should reduce the severity of your cat allergy. To keep it working properly you will need to clean or replace the filter periodically. If your home has a great deal of carpet try to vacuum it daily or at least every other day. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter for best results as well as one with hand tools so you can vacuum furniture your cat rests on.

It is a good idea to wash your hands plenty throughout the day, but make sure you do it after touching your cat. You can wash your cat as well but don’t do it too often or their skin will get dry, causing more dander than before. Ask your veterinarian about products you can apply to your cat’s coat instead. Make sure you clean the cat’s bed and toys too. If your cat allergy is severe you may have to confine your cat to a particular location of the house or put it outside.
